Replanted and pot-grown produce: tithes, טבל and תרומה, כלאים in a pot with no hole, and the new משנה of the five grains
Overview
This amud finishes רבה's question about produce that was tithed, then replanted, and then grew more. Does it follow the original, already-tithed part or the new growth? אביי asks how this differs from ordinary wheat and barley. רבה explains that he is asking only about a plant whose seed does not rot away. A proof from a tithed ליטרא of onions is rejected, because planting whole onions is their normal way of being sown. A question about a pot with no hole that later gets a hole is shown to be one sowing, unlike רבה's case of two sowings. רבי אבהו asks whether grain that became טבל and was replanted can be made תרומה while still growing. אביי defends the view that it can, explaining that the teaching 'there is no תרומה attached to the ground' is only about death and the extra fifth, since eating attached produce is not normal eating. Then אביי asks what שמואל's ban on planting כלאים in a pot with no hole adds, since a משנה in דמאי already teaches this. A new משנה lists the five grains for חלה, חדש and the עומר, and the גמרא begins sorting them into the wheat and barley families.
