Overview

The amud opens by finishing a ברייתא of רבי אליעזר. From a פסוק that lists צרוע, זב and טמא לנפש together, he learns that זבין and מצורעין follow טמאי מתים. So when the פסח is brought in טומאה, they are not liable for entering. Then a new משנה teaches that the dough for שתי הלחם and לחם הפנים is kneaded and shaped outside the עזרה, baked inside, and does not override שבת. רבי יהודה says everything is done inside, and רבי שמעון says the breads are כשר even in בית פאגי. The גמרא finds the תנא קמא's words hard. Its question first concerns which vessel makes the flour holy. It then sharpens into a different problem: if the oven makes the bread holy, bread baked before שבת should become פסול through לינה. An answer given in רב אשי's name, that 'inside' means a place of careful כהנים, is rejected as a mistake. רבי אבהו בר כהנא then shows that רבי יהודה and רבי שמעון read the same פסוק about דוד at נוב in opposite ways: is the bread made holy by the oven or by the שולחן? Finally, the גמרא points out that דוד received bread already removed from the שולחן, and it rereads his words as an argument that he may eat the לחם הפנים.
