When does a נזיר who became טמא start his new count of נזירות טהרה: the seventh day, the eighth day, or after his חטאת and אשם are brought?
Overview
The גמרא shows how רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה learns from the extra words "ביום ההוא" that the new נזירות starts on the seventh day. רבי uses the same words for something else: the count starts on the eighth day even before the קרבנות are brought. The גמרא then asks why רב חסדא did not explain the משנה according to רבי, using impurity on the night before the eighth day. רב אדא בר אהבה explains that for רבי, the new נזירות begins exactly when the קרבן can be brought, so the night case never fits the משנה. Next the גמרא quotes a ברייתא with three views on when the new count begins. רבי אליעזר says on the eighth day itself. חכמים say after the חטאת. רבי ישמעאל says only after both the חטאת and the אשם. Each view's reading of the word "ההוא" is explained, including a debate over whether the עולה, which is only a gift, needs a word at all. Finally the גמרא begins a ברייתא giving the רבנן's source, which continues on the next amud.
