Does a permitted food join with a forbidden food to reach the minimum amount (היתר מצטרף לאיסור)? First, זעירי applies it to burning leaven on the מזבח. Then אביי challenges רב דימי's report of רבי יוחנן's rule.

Overview

זעירי teaches that the rule 'permitted food joins with forbidden food to make up the amount' also applies to the ban on offering leaven (שאור) on the מזבח. The גמרא says he follows רבי אלעזר, who learns from the word 'כל' that mixtures count. It asks why זעירי did not also mention eating חמץ on פסח. The answer is that the rule applies there too. זעירי's real point is to reject אביי and teach that offering less than a כזית is not punishable. Then רב דימי repeats רבי יוחנן's teaching that permitted joins with forbidden only for a נזיר. אביי objects from a משנה about a soup with תרומה garlic and oil that a טבול יום touched. רבי יוחנן himself explained that a זר is lashed for eating a כזית of that soup, even though most of it is חולין. אביי asks for the reason behind this, building a contradiction that the גמרא takes up on the next amud.
