When a נזיר may drink wine: one action or all of them, and whether the תנופה is required

Overview

The amud opens with the end of the משנה, where רבי שמעון rules that once the blood of just one of the נזיר's קרבנות is sprinkled, he may drink wine and become טמא to the dead. The גמרא then brings a ברייתא. רבי אליעזר says the נזיר may drink wine only after all the actions are done, and the חכמים say one action is enough. The חכמים learn this from a גזירה שוה on the word 'אחר' ('after'). When the גמרא suggests he might need both actions, it answers that the גזירה שוה would then serve no purpose. Next, רב rules that the תנופה (waving) of the נזיר's offering is מעכב. The גמרא shows this cannot follow the רבנן, since for them even shaving is not required. So רב follows רבי אליעזר. His ruling is still needed: for כפרה, waving is only שירי מצוה, so we might have thought it is not required for the נזיר either.

Opening lines

רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר:

כֵּיוָן שֶׁנִּזְרַק עָלָיו אֶחָד מִן הַדָּמִים —

Once the blood of one of the offerings has been sprinkled on his behalf,

הוּתַּר הַנָּזִיר לִשְׁתּוֹת בְּיַיִן

the nazir is permitted to drink wine

וּלְהִיטַּמֵּא לְמֵתִים.

and to become impure from the dead.
