Which כהן stays טהור when a מת מצוה is found, and the source that a כהן גדול must bury a מת מצוה
Overview
This amud finishes a list of pairs of כהנים who find a מת מצוה together. In each pair, the more important כהן stays טהור and the other one becomes טמא to bury the מת. An anointed כהן גדול ranks above a מרובה בגדים, a serving מרובה בגדים ranks above a משוח שעבר, and a כהן who stepped aside for קרי ranks above one removed for a מום. Then the גמרא asks a real question: does the משוח מלחמה or the סגן rank higher? A ברייתא says the משוח מלחמה becomes impure, but another ברייתא says he comes first. מר זוטרא explains the difference: for saving a life the משוח מלחמה comes first, and for טומאה the סגן comes first, because he must stay ready to replace the כהן גדול. Finally, the גמרא returns to the משנה. It notes that a כהן גדול or a נזיר who is alone must bury a מת מצוה. It then finds the source for the כהן גדול in the words 'for his father' in ויקרא 21:11.
