How a partly released נדר works according to רבה and רבא: the listed-people משנה, the onion משנה, and רבי נתן's challenge.

Overview

This amud continues the argument between רבה and רבא about a נדר that is partly released. רבא is challenged: if everyone agrees about the case of 'to this one and to that one', why does the משנה give that ruling in רבי עקיבא's name, as if רבנן disagree? רבא answers that רבה has the same problem, because a 'to all of you' case has no first or last person. He then reads the משנה differently. The first part is 'to all of you', and the end is a chain where each person is linked to the one before him. A ברייתא about releasing the 'middle one' supports this reading. Next, רב אדא בר אהבה challenges רבא from the onion משנה, where רבי מאיר released a man from all onions. The גמרא answers that the man would have listed the onions one by one, so everyone agrees. Finally, רבינא begins a new challenge from רבי נתן, who says a vow can be partly permitted and partly forbidden; the case continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

אֶלָּא סֵיפָא,

But the latter clause,

דְּאָמַר ״לָזֶה וְלָזֶה״,

where he said, 'to this one and to that one,'

רַבִּי עֲקִיבָא הִיא,

is the view of Rabbi Akiva,

אַמַּאי פְּלִיגִי רַבָּנַן עֲלֵיהּ?

why do the Rabbis disagree with him?
