Does permitted new growth (גידולי היתר) cancel out the prohibition of the original plant? A proof from a ברייתא about weeding חסיות, and why שביעית is a special case.

Overview

The גמרא quotes a ברייתא about someone who weeds bulb plants (חסיות) together with a כותי. It then quotes רבי שמעון בן אלעזר's ruling that, once שביעית is over, it is permitted to weed and snack with a Jew suspected of not keeping שביעית. From this, the גמרא tries to prove that גידולי היתר מעלין את האיסור, meaning new growth that comes up in a permitted time cancels the prohibition of the original plant. It blocks three ways around the proof: maybe the seed disappears, maybe the plants were crushed, or maybe the case is a mixture. The proof seems to refute רבי יוחנן and רבי יונתן, who held that new growth does not cancel the prohibition. רבי יצחק answers that שביעית is different: its prohibition comes through the ground, so the ground can also cancel it. The גמרא challenges this answer with מעשר, which also comes through the ground but is not cancelled by it. It backs up the challenge with a ברייתא about a planted litra of untithed מעשר. The discussion continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

הַמְנַכֵּשׁ עִם הַכּוּתִי בַּחֲסִיּוֹת —

One who weeds bulb plants with a Samaritan —

אוֹכֵל מֵהֶן אֲכִילַת עֲרַאי,

may eat from them a casual snack,

וּמְעַשְּׂרָן וַדַּאי.

and he tithes them as definitely untithed.
