Does permitted material cancel a forbidden item? רבי שמעון's rule about items that 'have מתירין', the challenge from שביעית, and a new proof from rained-on onions
Overview
The גמרא is trying to settle whether permitted material or permitted growth can cancel out a forbidden item. It quotes a ברייתא of רבי שמעון: items that will become permitted later, like טבל or חדש, are never cancelled, but items that stay forbidden forever, like תרומה or ערלה, can be cancelled. The חכמים challenge him from שביעית, which seems to stay forbidden yet forbids its own kind in any amount. רבי שמעון answers that the 'any amount' rule is only about ביעור, while for eating the rule is נותן טעם. The גמרא rejects this as a proof, because a stringent ruling may be different. Next it brings a משנה about onions that sprouted during or after שביעית, which suggests that permitted growth cancels the forbidden original. That proof is pushed away too: maybe the משנה is about crushed onions that are no longer fit to eat. The amud ends as the גמרא begins quoting a ברייתא for a new proof, which continues on the next amud.

וְהֶקְדֵּשׁ וְחָדָשׁ —
and consecrated items and new grain,
לֹא נָתְנוּ בָּהֶן חֲכָמִים שִׁיעוּר.
the Sages did not set a measure for them.
