Whether growths (גידולין) cancel out a forbidden original plant (עיקר), using onions in שביעית, טבל seeds that were planted, and an onion of תרומה that was planted
Overview
The גמרא finishes quoting a משנה about onions that sprouted after rain: if their leaves came out black they are forbidden, and if the leaves turned green they are permitted. It asks why the onions should be forbidden, since the original onion was permitted. The answer is that the משנה forbids only the new growth, not the original onion. The גמרא then asks what רבן שמעון בן גמליאל adds in a ברייתא, since he seems to say the same thing. It answers that the whole משנה is his view. It also adds a rule: when a person actively plants (טרח), the original is cancelled by the majority (בטל ברוב). This rule is challenged from a planted ליטרא of untithed מעשר, which still needs tithing. The answer is that מעשר is a special case based on the פסוק עשר תעשר. Finally, the גמרא returns to רבי ינאי's ruling that a planted onion of תרומה is permitted once its growths exceed the original. It begins to question that ruling, and the question continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
אִם הָיוּ עָלִין שֶׁלָּהֶן שְׁחוֹרִין — אֲסוּרִין,
If their leaves were black — they are forbidden,
הוֹרִיקוּ — מוּתָּרִין.
if they turned green — they are permitted.
וְכִי שְׁחוֹרִין אַמַּאי אֲסוּרִין?
And if they are black, why are they forbidden?
לֵימָא: הֶיתֵּר שֶׁבָּהֶן לְהֵיכָן הָלַךְ?
Let us say: the permitted part in them, where did it go?
