Whether נידוי and שמתא wording can work as a נדר, and related rules about נידוי
Overview
The amud opens by finishing רב פפא's explanation that רבי עקיבא and the רבנן argue about the phrase 'מנודה אני לך'. רבי עקיבא hears it as distancing wording, which can be a נדר, while the רבנן hear it as excommunication wording. The גמרא then shows from a story that רב חסדא holds differently: they argue even about 'משמתנא'. Next come teachings of רב about נידוי. A נידוי given to a person's face is lifted only to his face, and one who hears God's name said in vain must put the speaker in נידוי, because such talk brings poverty, which counts like death. A story about רב הונא backs up these rules and teaches that a נידוי may be lifted right away. רב also teaches that a תלמיד חכם may put himself in נידוי and lift it himself, as מר זוטרא חסידא did. The amud ends as רב גידל begins another teaching of רב, which continues on the next amud.
