Overview

This amud opens with the end of a comparison: just as grain always comes with straw, no dream is free of meaningless parts. So if someone dreams he was put in נידוי and then released, the release may be one of those meaningless parts. Next comes a story. רבינא's wife had a נדר, and he asked רב אשי whether a husband can be her שליח to tell the judges she regrets it. רב אשי answered: yes if the judges are already gathered, and no if they are not. The גמרא learns three rules from this story, and adds that a שמתא may be released even in one's teacher's town and by a single expert. Then a long chain of teachers explains the פסוק in מלאכי: 'those who fear My name' are people who never say שם שמים in vain, and a healing sun will rise for them. אביי learns from this that daytime sunshine heals. The גמרא notes that this disagrees with ריש לקיש, who says there is no גיהנם in עולם הבא. Instead, the uncovered sun will heal and delight the righteous and burn the wicked.
