The wording of הבדלה: עולא's one-line הבדלה, the story of how it was reported, and a ברייתא about which ברכות open and close with 'ברוך', brought to challenge it.
Overview
This amud opens by ending the previous discussion: the הלכה does not follow the opinion just quoted, and instead follows שמואל. The גמרא then tells a story. רב יהודה sends his son רב יצחק to bring the visiting sage עולא a basket of fruit and watch how he makes הבדלה. רב יצחק sends אביי instead. אביי reports that עולא said only 'ברוך המבדיל בין קודש לחול' and nothing more. רב יהודה scolds his son, because his pride means the teaching will be credited to אביי and not to him. The גמרא then challenges עולא's short form from a ברייתא. The ברייתא teaches that every ברכה opens and closes with 'ברוך', except for a list of exceptions: some open without closing, some close without opening, and הטוב והמטיב is a special case. The גמרא draws out the challenge against עולא and deals with it on the next amud.
