Overview

The amud continues the proof that בשר בחלב is אסור בהנאה. The proof goes through a chain of cases: ערלה, then חמץ בפסח, then כלאי הכרם. Each case covers the weakness of the one before it. The גמרא then asks whether אביי's rule breaks the proof. His rule is that one gets מלקות for כלאי הכרם even for unusual benefit. The answer is no, because the verse about בשר בחלב also does not say 'eating.' The challenger disagrees and learns from נבילה that only normal benefit is punished. Next, רבי אדא בר אהבה learns that even the original seeds of כלאי הכרם become forbidden. רבא reconciles this with a משנה about a pot with a hole: a plant sown in the vineyard is forbidden once it takes root, while a plant brought in later is forbidden only if it grows there. Finally, רבי יוחנן rules that one may heal with any forbidden thing except עבודה זרה, even in danger, based on ״בכל נפשך״. רבין's broader version of this rule begins at the end of the amud and continues on the next amud.
