Vegetable פאה, the hides of קדשים seized by powerful כהנים, and the four cries of the עזרה
Overview
The גמרא first shows that the two ברייתות about פאה for vegetables hold only two opinions, רבי יוסי and רבי שמעון, who agree on the first vegetable. A ברייתא then tells of בן בוהיין, who gave פאה from vegetables. His father took the vegetables back and paid the poor double in tithed produce, because vegetables are not subject to פאה. Next, a ברייתא tells how powerful כהנים seized the hides of קדשים by force. Moving the division to ערב שבת did not stop them, so the owners consecrated the hides, and the money soon plated the whole היכל in gold. אבא שאול tells a similar story about the sycamore trunks of יריחו, and then a lament against four oppressive high-priestly families. A ברייתא lists four cries of the עזרה: two drove out unworthy כהנים (בני עלי and יששכר איש כפר ברקאי), and two welcomed worthy ones (ישמעאל בן פיאכי and יוחנן בן נרבאי). The amud ends as the גמרא begins the story of יששכר's punishment, which continues on the next amud.
