Whether שלמים slaughtered on ערב יום טוב count for שמחה (עולא vs. רבין), and רב כהנא's source for when the אימורים of the חגיגה become פסול
Overview
This amud opens at the end of עולא's ruling. שלמים slaughtered on ערב יום טוב do not count for שמחה, because they were not slaughtered at a time of rejoicing. They also do not count for חגיגה, because an obligation must come from חולין. A proof for עולא from a ברייתא about the first and last nights of the festival is rejected, because the ברייתא gives its own reason: only a night with days of rejoicing before it is included. רב יוסף and רבא challenge עולא. The answers are that the חגיגה of the fourteenth was really slaughtered on the fifteenth, and that on a שבת יום טוב one rejoices with clean clothes and old wine. רבין then reports a different version in the name of רבי אלעזר: such שלמים do count for שמחה, and the same ברייתא is no proof against him. Next, רב כהנא learns from the word ״ראשית״ that the אימורים of the חגיגה of the fifteenth must be offered before the first morning. רב יוסף, אביי and רבא debate whether that extra word is really needed. The amud ends as the גמרא begins quoting a ברייתא about meat, which continues on the next amud.
