Topic

Obvious cases in the משנה of the פסח on שבת, what an invalid שחיטה 'fixes' (מקלקל), and רב's rule that an אשם sent to graze needs no עקירה

Overview

The עמוד opens by finishing an earlier topic: a פסוק teaches that a כהן eating תרומה anywhere counts like Temple service. The גמרא then asks why our משנה bothers to say that slaughtering the קרבן פסח on שבת for people who cannot eat it makes one חייב. It answers that the obvious cases lead up to the real חידוש, the מחלוקת of רבי אליעזר and רבי יהושע. Next, רב הונא בר חיננא asks: if a purely destructive act (מקלקל) on שבת is פטור, why is an invalid שחיטה חייב? Case by case, the גמרא shows that each such שחיטה still 'fixed' something. The parts can stay on the מזבח, a visible טריפה is kept from becoming נבילה, and even slaughter for עבודה זרה removes the animal from אבר מן החי. The גמרא then brings רב's ruling that an אשם sent to graze, if slaughtered without a stated purpose, is valid as an עולה with no עקירה needed. It proves from a משנה that the grazing requirement is only a rabbinic גזירה. Finally רב חסדא begins a challenge to רב הונא from our משנה, and the argument continues on the next עמוד.

and the outsider who comes near shall be put to death"

like the service of the Temple.

The steps (22)

  1. ProofA פסוק shows that eating תרומה counts as Temple service
  2. ChallengeWhy teach that slaughtering for non-eaters is liable? It is obvious
  3. ResolutionThe first clause was taught to match the exempt clause
  4. ChallengeBut the exempt clause is obvious too
  5. ResolutionThe non-eaters case was taught alongside the not-for-its-sake case
  6. ChallengeWhy is the not-for-its-sake case itself needed?
  7. ResolutionAll these cases set up the dispute of רבי אליעזר and רבי יהושע
  8. ChallengeIf destructive wounding is exempt, why is invalid slaughter liable?
  9. ResolutionThe slaughter fixed something: the parts can stay on the altar
  10. ChallengeWhat did he fix with a blemished animal?
  11. ResolutionA tiny eyelid blemish, following רבי עקיבא
  12. ChallengeWhat did he fix with a visible טריפה?
  13. ResolutionThe slaughter kept it from becoming נבילה
  14. Challengeרבינא: what was fixed by slaughtering for idolatry?
  15. ResolutionThe slaughter removed it from אבר מן החי
  16. StatementAn אשם sent to graze and slaughtered without a stated purpose is valid as an עולה
  17. ChallengeThen it should be valid even before it was sent to graze
  18. ResolutionA rabbinic decree: after כפרה, because of before כפרה
  19. ProofBringing a source: the משנה about an אשם whose owner died or got כפרה
  20. ProofIts money may become an עולה, but not the animal itself
  21. ConclusionThe proof is accepted
  22. Challengeרב חסדא challenges רב הונא from our משנה
