How hot and cold foods transfer taste (רב: עילאה גבר vs. שמואל: תתאה גבר), tested against the משנה about the gravy of the קרבן פסח dripping onto earthenware and flour.
Overview
This amud asks how taste passes between foods when one falls onto another. Hot into hot is forbidden and cold into cold is permitted, according to everyone. רב and שמואל argue about mixed cases: רב says the top item decides (עילאה גבר), and שמואל says the bottom item decides (תתאה גבר). The גמרא tests both views against the משנה about the קרבן פסח: gravy dripping onto earthenware, gravy dripping onto flour, and the פסח smeared with oil of תרומה. Each case fits רב, and שמואל's side answers each challenge: the earthenware and flour were hot, and smearing uses only a tiny amount of oil. Two ברייתות then support שמואל, after the גמרא corrects their wording so that hot falling into cold needs peeling and cold into cold needs only rinsing. רב הונא adds that salted food is forbidden even when cold, because שמואל said salted food is like boiling food and pickled food is like cooked food. רבא limits that rule to food too salty to eat, which explains why רב חיננא permitted a bird that fell into כמכא, with limits for a roasted, cracked, or spiced bird. The amud ends as a new statement of רב begins.
