Does smell (ריחא) make food forbidden? The dispute between רב and לוי, and the new משנה on offerings brought in טומאה.

Overview

This amud asks whether smell (ריחא) can make food forbidden. One view (רב) says fatty kosher meat roasted beside lean נבילה becomes אסור, because the meats flavor each other. לוי disagrees: smell is nothing (ריחא לאו מילתא), and he ruled this way in practice at the house of the ריש גלותא. A ברייתא forbidding roasting two קרבנות פסח together is first read as being about the animals getting switched. After רבי ירמיה's answer, the גמרא rereads it so that it also forbids flavor-mixing, which fits רב. רב מרי links the dispute to תנאים arguing about hot bread placed on a barrel of תרומה wine. The גמרא shows that רב can say all the תנאים agree smell matters. Practical rulings follow: bread or fish roasted with meat may not be eaten with dairy, and fish roasted with meat should not be eaten at all because of danger. Then a new משנה lists five communal offerings that may be brought in טומאה but not eaten in טומאה, unlike the פסח. The גמרא explains that the count of five excludes the חגיגה of ט"ו ניסן, and it begins answering a question about the ראש חודש goats, which continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

בְּשַׂר שְׁחוּטָה שָׁמֵן,

Fatty kosher-slaughtered meat

שֶׁצְּלָאוֹ עִם בְּשַׂר נְבֵילָה כָּחוּשׁ — אָסוּר.

that one roasted together with lean non-kosher (neveilah) meat is forbidden.

מַאי טַעְמָא — מִפַּטְּמִי מֵהֲדָדֵי.

What is the reason? They flavor each other.

וְלֵוִי אָמַר: אֲפִילּוּ בְּשַׂר שְׁחוּטָה כָּחוּשׁ,

And Levi said: even lean kosher-slaughtered meat

The steps (29)

  10. ResolutionCorrection: roasted in a way that is like two pots

  24. ResponseWhy we might have thought the חגיגה overrides טומאה
  25. ResponseMake-up days mean no overriding שבת, so no overriding טומאה
  26. ChallengeWhy not also list the festival goats?
