Examples of real disputes for each phrase of the זקן ממרא פסוק: דין, דם, דין לדין, and נגע
Overview
The גמרא is going word by word through the פסוק about the זקן ממרא, 'כי יפלא ממך דבר למשפט, בין דם לדם, בין דין לדין, בין נגע לנגע'. For each phrase it gives a real dispute that could come before the בית דין הגדול. For 'למשפט', which means a דין, the example is the law of בתו מאנוסתו, learned through two גזירה שוה derivations, 'הנה' and 'זמה'. 'בין דם לדם' covers three kinds of blood. For נדה, the dispute is עקביא בן מהללאל against the חכמים about green blood. For לידה, it is רב against לוי on whether there is one source or two. For זיבה, it is רבי אליעזר against רבי יהושע about a woman who had relief from labor before giving birth. 'בין דין לדין' covers money cases (can two judges rule), capital cases (does 'a life for a life' mean money), and lashes (three judges or twenty-three). 'בין נגע לנגע' covers נגעים of a person, of houses, and of garments, with a dispute for each. The dispute about garments, between רבי יונתן בן אבטולמוס and the רבנן, continues on the next amud.
