Rewards for teaching תורה, sources for תחיית המתים, and a series of רבי אלעזר's sayings on דעה and conduct

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a reading of משלי 11:26: whoever holds back תורה from a student is cursed even by unborn babies, or, according to עולא בר ישמעאל, pierced full of holes. The one who does teach receives blessings like יוסף, and רב ששת adds that he will go on teaching in עולם הבא. רבא, רבינא and רב אשי then each bring a פסוק as a source for תחיית המתים. Next comes a long list of sayings by רבי אלעזר. They cover a gentle leader, the greatness of דעה and the מקדש (with a challenge from רב אדא קרחינאה about vengeance), what happens to people without דעה, a house without תורה at night, supporting תלמידי חכמים, leaving bread on the table, going back on one's word, and staying out of the spotlight. Two of these sayings seem to clash about leaving bread over, and the גמרא settles it by whether a whole loaf is present. The גמרא then returns to תחיית המתים: the grave is like a womb, taking in and giving out, and a קל וחומר strengthens the point. The amud ends with the teaching that the צדיקים who are brought back to life will never return to dust.

Opening lines

יִקְּבֻהוּ לְאוֹם״,

'...the nations shall curse him,'

וְאֵין לְאוֹם אֶלָּא עוּבָּרִין,

and לאום means only unborn babies,

שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״וּלְאֹם מִלְּאֹם יֶאֱמָץ״.

as it says: 'And one nation shall be stronger than the other nation.'

וְאֵין קַבֹּה אֶלָּא קְלָלָה,

And קבה means only a curse,
