תחיית המתים, the dead that יחזקאל revived, and the miracles of the fiery furnace
Overview
The עמוד first finishes the teaching of תנא דבי אליהו: the צדיקים who are brought back to life will never die again. While הקדוש ברוך הוא renews the world, they will fly over the water on eagle-like wings without growing tired. The גמרא asks why we do not learn the opposite from the dead that יחזקאל revived, and answers that this teaching holds the vision was only a משל. A ברייתא then brings several views: some say those dead really lived, sang, and died again. Others say it was only a משל. Still others say they went up to ארץ ישראל and had families, and רבי יהודה בן בתירא even says he is their descendant. Next, five אמוראים each say who those dead people were, ending with רבי יוחנן, who says they were beautiful youths killed by נבוכדנצר in בקעת דורא. A ברייתא tells how יחזקאל revived them on the day חנניה, מישאל, and עזריה were thrown into the furnace, and how this led נבוכדנצר to praise ה׳. The גמרא then lists six miracles from that day and learns from the three men's clothing that a person should keep his dignity even in danger. A new statement of רבי יוחנן begins at the end and continues on the next עמוד.
Opening lines
וְאִם תֹּאמַר: אוֹתָן שָׁנִים
And if you say: those years
שֶׁעָתִיד הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא
when the Holy One, Blessed be He, is destined
לְחַדֵּשׁ בָּהֶן אֶת עוֹלָמוֹ,
to renew His world during them,
שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״וְנִשְׂגַּב ה׳ לְבַדּוֹ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא״,
as it is stated: "And the Lord alone shall be exalted on that day,"
