No 'שלום' in the bathhouse, telling someone about a gift (the gift of שבת), and more teachings of רב through רבא בר מחסיא
Overview
This amud opens by finishing a point from the previous page: a בית הכסא is unfit for prayer as soon as it is designated, because it is disgusting. The גמרא then rules that one may not greet with 'שלום' in a bathhouse, because שלום is an actual Name of ה׳. 'Faithful' (הימנותא), by contrast, only describes ה׳, so רב permits saying it in a bathroom. Through the same chain of teachers (רבא בר מחסיא in the name of רב חמא בר גוריא in the name of רב), the גמרא brings רב's rule that a giver must let the receiver know. This is learned from ה׳ telling משה about the gift of שבת, and רבן שמעון בן גמליאל applies it to giving bread to a child. The גמרא explains that telling is needed only when the gift would otherwise stay hidden, and the reward of שבת is exactly that kind of hidden gift. A story follows in which רב חסדא gives his priestly gifts to רבא בר מחסיא in exchange for רב's teachings. The amud ends with more teachings from the same chain: never favor one child over the others, as יוסף's coat shows, and prefer to live in a recently settled city, which רבי אבין derives from צוער. His proof continues on the next amud.
