The broken-strap sandal and רבי יוחנן's view, פנים חדשות for repaired utensils, and the permitted knots on שבת
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a distinction: an item that still works for its purpose stays a כלי, but a sandal with a broken outer strap does not. The גמרא challenges רבי יוחנן's ruling like רבי יהודה from a סתם משנה about a sandal whose ears broke. רב יצחק בן יוסף answers by reading that משנה as a four-eared sandal. רבין then reports that רבי יוחנן ruled against רבי יהודה, and the גמרא explains that different אמוראים transmitted רבי יוחנן's view differently. Next, רבי חזקיה asks whether small sealed holes in a utensil add up to the pomegranate-size hole that makes it טהור. רבי יוחנן answers from his teacher's own sandal ruling: פנים חדשות באו לכאן, so a heavily repaired item counts as a new object. רבי חזקיה praises him, and the גמרא adds a saying about the greatness of earlier generations. Finally, the גמרא returns to the משנה's list of permitted knots on שבת. For each item it asks פשיטא and answers with a case of two openings, a pattern that continues onto the next amud.

וְהָאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן:
But didn't Rabbi Yochanan say:
