Topic

End of פרק ואלו קשרים (preparing food on יום כיפורים for after the fast) and the start of פרק כל כתבי: saving holy writings from a fire on שבת, and the מחלוקת between רב הונא and רב חסדא about holy writings in other languages.

Overview

The amud opens by finishing the previous topic: food preparation on יום כיפורים for after the fast. Light preparation such as trimming vegetables or cracking nuts is allowed only from מנחה onward, because of עגמת נפש, and רבה stopped his household from starting earlier. After the הדרן, a new פרק begins with a משנה: on שבת we may save all כתבי הקודש from a fire, whether they are read publicly or not, and books in other languages require גניזה. The גמרא brings a מחלוקת. For holy writings in תרגום or another language, רב הונא says we do not save them, and רב חסדא says we do, to prevent בזיון. The משנה is first brought as a refutation of רב הונא, but each אמורא reads it his own way. Two ברייתות are then raised against רב הונא. He answers that this is a dispute among תנאים, and that רבי יוסי agrees with him. רבי יוסי supports his view with a story about a translated ספר איוב that was buried. רבי rejects one version of that story, teaching that holy writings may not be destroyed by hand but are left to decay on their own. The amud ends as the גמרא begins to ask which תנאים are in dispute, a question answered on the next amud.
