Overview

The amud opens by finishing a series of reports by רבי אבא בר כהנא in the name of רבי חנינא about leniencies for בית רבי. Their קרונות may be moved on שבת, even large ones 'like those in your father's house.' Their wine, sent in a גוי's wagons with only one חותם, was permitted, though he is unsure whether this follows רבי אליעזר or comes from fear of the נשיא. A new משנה teaches that a Jew may benefit from a מלאכה a גוי did for himself, but not from one done for the Jew, with examples of a lamp, water and a ramp, and a story about רבן גמליאל. The גמרא explains why each case is needed. Then a ברייתא adds that the היתר applies only when the גוי does not know the Jew. That limit seems to clash with רבן גמליאל on the ship. אביי answers that the ramp was not made in front of him, while רבא says a ramp, like a lamp, serves a hundred as easily as one. Two more ברייתות, about a bathhouse and a lamp at a banquet, are answered by saying that a service for a group is done with the majority in mind, and that last answer finishes on the next amud.
