Whether a shutter or bolt must be tied to be used on שבת: רבי ירמיה's proof from the נגר הנגרר, רבי אבא's reply from רבן שמעון בן גמליאל, and רבי יוחנן's ruling
Overview
The משנה earlier argued about closing a window with a shutter (פקק החלון) on שבת. רבי אליעזר permits it only if the shutter is tied and hanging, while the חכמים are more lenient. רבי אבא's tradition states the lenient view this way: the shutter may be used whether it is tied or not, as long as it was prepared for this use. רבי ירמיה objects that the lenient view still requires tying and only drops the need for hanging. He proves this from the parallel dispute about a נגר הנגרר (a dragging door-bolt). The proof draws on three sources: a ruling of רבי יוחנן, a משנה, a ברייתא, and עולא's identification of the strict opinion as רבי אליעזר. רבי אבא answers that his wording follows a ברייתא in which רבן שמעון בן גמליאל permits a prepared bolt even if it is untied. רבי יוחנן rules like רבן שמעון בן גמליאל. The גמרא then begins to challenge that ruling from a משנה about vessel covers, and the challenge continues on the next amud.
