The opinion of רבי אליעזר that preparations for מילה (such as carrying the knife) override שבת, רבי עקיבא's opposing rule, and the גמרא's question about why רבי אליעזר requires the knife to be carried uncovered.
Overview
The new פרק opens with a משנה about מילה on שבת. רבי אליעזר holds that even the preparations for מילה override שבת: the knife may be carried on שבת uncovered, and one may even cut wood to forge a new knife. רבי עקיבא disagrees: only the מילה itself overrides שבת, because the preparations could have been done before שבת. The גמרא asks why רבי אליעזר wants the knife uncovered, and concludes that it is out of love for the מצוה (חבובי מצוה). It then asks how many עדים are needed when the knife is covered in a time of danger, and this question is not resolved. A ברייתא reports that רבי אליעזר's town followed his ruling and רבי יוסי הגלילי's town ate poultry in milk. The story of לוי shows that one may not punish a town for following its own רב. Aggadot follow in praise of מילה: a city that followed רבי אליעזר was rewarded, and מצוות accepted with joy or defended with self-sacrifice remain strong, unlike תפילין. The story of אלישע בעל כנפים illustrates that point. The amud ends by beginning a story about a forgotten knife for a ברית on שבת, which continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
מַתְנִי׳ רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר:
MISHNA: Rabbi Eliezer says:
אִם לֹא הֵבִיא כְּלִי מֵעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת
If he did not bring the implement on Shabbat eve,
— מְבִיאוֹ בְּשַׁבָּת מְגוּלֶּה,
he brings it on Shabbat uncovered,
וּבַסַּכָּנָה מְכַסֵּהוּ עַל פִּי עֵדִים.
and in a time of danger he covers it, in the presence of witnesses.
