Carrying the מילה knife on שבת according to רבי שמעון, and whether one may carry throughout a מבוי without שיתוף
Overview
This amud opens with the last words of a ברייתא: the knife for a ברית מילה was brought on שבת through roofs and courtyards, 'not according to the wishes of רבי אליעזר.' רב יוסף objects that רבי אליעזר is the most lenient opinion, and the suggestion that the act followed the רבנן fails, because the רבנן forbid that route too. רב אשי explains that the act followed רבי שמעון, who treats roofs, enclosures and courtyards as one domain for objects resting there when שבת began. רבי זירא asks רבי אסי whether רבי שמעון's leniency also covers a מבוי without שיתוף, and רבי אסי is silent. Later רבי אסי tells a story about a forgotten scalpel that was carried from one end of an unjoined מבוי to the other. He then confirms that one may carry throughout such a מבוי, explaining that his learning had come back to him. The גמרא then brings רב's ruling that in an unjoined מבוי one may carry only four אמות. רבה בר אבוה explains that this applies only when the courtyards made an עירוב with their houses; otherwise one may carry throughout. רב חנינא חוזאה begins to probe this explanation using another ruling of רב about לחי and קורה, and his challenge continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
שֶׁלֹּא בִּרְצוֹן רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר.
Not according to the wishes of Rabbi Eliezer.
מַתְקִיף לַהּ רַב יוֹסֵף:
Rav Yosef strongly objected to this:
שֶׁלֹּא בִּרְצוֹן רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר!
'Not according to the wishes of Rabbi Eliezer'?!
אַדְּרַבָּה, רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר הוּא דְּשָׁרֵי!
On the contrary, Rabbi Eliezer is the one who permits!
