When a baby, including a slave born to a שפחה, is circumcised on the eighth day versus right away, and when a newborn is no longer considered a possible נפל.
Overview
This amud opens at the end of an answer: proofs from before מתן תורה do not count, because the הלכה was renewed at סיני. רב אסי had taught that a baby whose birth does not make his mother טמאה לידה, such as a יוצא דופן, is not circumcised on the eighth day. The גמרא challenges him from a מחלוקת between רב הונא and רב חייא בר רב about breaking שבת for a יוצא דופן. It answers that the שבת question and the eighth-day question depend on each other. Next the גמרא shows that רב אסי's idea is a מחלוקת תנאים, quoting a ברייתא about slaves circumcised at one day or at eight days. רב חמא makes it depend on whether the mother's טבילה came before the birth, while the תנא קמא requires eight days anyway. רבא shows that רבי חמא can explain all four cases and asks how the תנא קמא can have a home-born slave circumcised at one day. רבי ירמיה and רב משרשיא each supply such a case. Finally, a ברייתא of רבן שמעון בן גמליאל teaches that a baby who lives 30 days, or an animal that lives 8 days, is not a נפל. The גמרא begins to ask whether a baby under 30 days is a ספק, and that question continues on the next amud.
