Overview

The amud continues a ברייתא that learns from the word ערלתו that only a definite מילה overrides שבת. The first תנא excludes a ספק case and an אנדרוגינוס. רבי יהודה holds that an אנדרוגינוס's מילה does override שבת, and he uses the word to exclude a baby born בין השמשות and a baby born already circumcised. About that baby, בית שמאי and בית הלל argue whether דם ברית must be drawn. רבי שמעון בן אלעזר says everyone requires it because of ערלה כבושה, and the real argument is about a גר who was circumcised before converting. The גמרא explains that 'ספק' refers to a baby who may be a בן שמונה, who is also treated like a stone on שבת. רב and שמואל argue over whose version of the מחלוקת is the הלכה. The story of רב אדא בר אהבה's son then leads to the question of whether the hidden foreskin is a doubt (רבה) or a certainty (רב יוסף), and the גמרא shows that רב יוסף's proof from רבי אליעזר הקפר is not conclusive. Finally, רבי אסי links eighth-day מילה to the mother's טומאת לידה, and אביי challenges him from the generations before מתן תורה. רבי אסי begins his answer, which continues on the next amud.
