Topic

שבת נא: — The end of במה טומנין (insulating food, cold food, melting ice) and the start of במה בהמה: which gear an animal may wear on שבת, and whether extra security is a משאוי

Overview

This amud finishes the chapter במה טומנין and opens a new chapter. First, the ברייתא ends its rules on insulating food: a pot may not be removed and put back, fine flax chaff counts like manure, and vessels may be stacked or sealed with dough only to keep heat in, never to add it. The תנא קמא forbids insulating cold food, while רבי permits it. Crushing snow or hail into water on שבת is forbidden, but letting it melt by itself in a cup is fine. After the הדרן, a new משנה asks what gear an animal may wear into the public domain on שבת, pairing each animal with its normal control device. The גמרא defines the unusual terms and then asks whether an animal may wear stronger gear than it needs. After a proof is pushed off, the גמרא shows this is a dispute between תנאים about a cat with a collar, and rules like חנניה: extra security is not a משאוי. The amud ends with a story about לוי and רבה בר רב הונא that continues on the next amud.
