When does an object count as 'resting' (הנחה) for the laws of carrying on שבת? רבא's explanations: the inclined wall, water on top of water, and the nut floating in a vessel.
Overview
This עמוד asks when an object counts as having 'come to rest' (הנחה) for the laws of carrying on שבת. First the גמרא recalls a משנה about a scroll that rolled off a roof. רבא explains that the scroll lies on a slanted wall (כותל משופע), so it counts as resting. That answer does not work for flowing water. So רבא explains that the water was scooped from a hole already full of water, because water on top of water counts as resting. A nut floating on water does not count as resting. רבא's question about a nut inside a floating vessel stays a doubt (תיקו). Oil floating on wine is tied to a dispute between רבי יוחנן בן נורי and the רבנן. Next, רבי יוחנן rules that a loaded person who wanders in and out is not liable until he stops, and אביי adds that the stop must be to rest. Finally, a ברייתא about carrying from a store to a plaza through a colonnade raises the question of liability through a middle domain, and רבי יוחנן's answer begins at the end of the עמוד and continues on the next one.
