Topic

The practices of אבוה דשמואל and the debate over rainwater in the פרת; אביי on fastening a cloak on a coin and on a nut as a trick; the new משנה about an amputee's wooden leg.

Overview

This amud opens at the end of a proof. The גמרא tried to show from the practice of אבוה דשמואל, who kept his daughters from sleeping together, that רב הונא was right that women intimate with each other are פסולות לכהונה. The גמרא rejects that proof: he may only have wanted them not to get used to another body. His second practice, building a מקוה in ניסן, supports רב's view that the swelling of the פרת comes from rain, since rainwater does not purify while flowing. The גמרא notes that this argues with שמואל, and that שמואל's own two statements seem to clash. It then returns to the משנה. אביי explains that the rule against fastening a cloak לכתחילה on שבת refers only to a coin, which is מוקצה. אביי then asks whether a woman may fasten her cloak on a nut as a trick (הערמה) to carry it to her child, comparing it to the trick allowed in a fire. The question ends with תיקו. Finally, a new משנה begins: רבי מאיר says an amputee may go out on שבת with his wooden leg.
