Topic
What a woman may wear or carry on her body outside on שבת: cloths, mouth items, false teeth, a healing coin, girls' ear threads and fastened cloaks, plus the strict practices of שמואל's father.
Overview
This amud opens with the end of a ברייתא about spreading wet clothes in the sun. It shows that תנאים argue whether a מראית העין ban applies even in private. The גמרא then explains our משנה's list of things a woman may wear outside on שבת. A מוך in the ear or sandal must be tied, but a menstrual מוך need not be, because it is repulsive and she will not carry it. Two great sages went out with untied ear cloths, and the גמרא explains that a cloth pressed in tightly needs no tying. The גמרא explains the pepper, salt and spices in her mouth, and limits the dispute about a false tooth to gold only. אביי shows that רבי, רבי אליעזר and רבי שמעון בן אלעזר share one idea: a woman will not take off and show an item whose removal makes her look bad. A new משנה permits a coin on a foot wound, threads in girls' ears, veils and fastened cloaks. The גמרא explains why a סלע heals the wound. It then tells of שמואל's father's strict practices with his daughters, and that discussion continues on the next amud.
