Defining a כרמלית and the public domain: the walled valley, the corner, the pillars and bench, obstacles in the street, and the size limits of a כרמלית

Overview

This amud continues the ברייתא that lists places with the status of a כרמלית. רב אשי resolves the contradiction about a valley by saying the משנה means a walled valley. He is backed by עולא's own report from רבי יוחנן that a huge walled קרפף is a רשות היחיד by Torah law. The גמרא asks why עולא did not answer that way himself. עולא says a walled area would be called a קרפף, not a valley, and רב אשי points to the משנה's label 'רשות היחיד.' Next, the גמרא explains the extra item 'כרמלית' in the list as a corner beside the public domain, and it adds the area between the pillars and the bench in front of them, since their use is awkward. רב חסדא and others then discuss which raised or unpleasant spots in the street (a brick, thorns, filth) stop counting as רשות הרבים. Finally, רבי יוחנן and רב ששת set a כרמלית's size: at least four טפחים wide, and only up to ten טפחים high. The גמרא then begins asking what שמואל meant by 'above ten,' a question that continues on the next amud.
