שמואל's rule about כרמלית, רב's low house and אביי's pit, the dispute over חורי רשות הרבים, and רב חסדא's stick in a רשות היחיד

Overview

The גמרא first works out what שמואל meant by 'no domain above ten טפחים.' It cannot mean רשות הרבים, because that is already an explicit משנה. So it means כרמלית, which חז"ל gave one leniency from each side: it needs 4×4 like רשות היחיד, and it stops at ten like רשות הרבים. Next, with גופא, the גמרא returns to רב's ruling about a low house: one may carry anywhere on its roof, but only four אמות inside. אביי adds that digging a 4×4 pit that reaches ten makes the whole house private, because חורי רשות היחיד are like רשות היחיד. אביי and רבא then argue whether חורי רשות הרבים are like רשות הרבים. אביי defends his view against challenges from a corner next to רשות הרבים and from רבי יוחנן's sticky fig cake, and the גמרא proves that the משנה's wall has no hole. Finally, the גמרא turns to רב חסדא's ruling that a stick in a רשות היחיד counts at any height. It asks whether he follows רבי, who does not require a 4×4 resting place, and that question continues on the next amud.
