Whether difficult use counts as use (the pit and the shallow pool), רב יהודה on flipping a bundle of reeds, and the threshold as a מקום פטור
Overview
The amud opens with a ברייתא about a person who sets his שבת place in רשות הרבים and puts his עירוב in a pit. 'Above ten טפחים' the עירוב works, and 'below ten' it fails. The גמרא shows this must mean a shallow pit. That seems to prove that תשמיש על ידי הדחק שמיה תשמיש, against רבא. רבא gives two answers. In the first, both the person and the pit are a כרמלית. In the second, the food is in a כרמלית and the ברייתא follows רבי, who holds that a שבות was not decreed during בין השמשות. רבא then proves his rule from the doubled wording in the משנה of a shallow pool (רקק מים): walking with difficulty counts as walking, but use with difficulty does not count as use. Next, רב יהודה rules that flipping a bundle of reeds along the ground creates no liability until it is lifted. The גמרא then returns to the ברייתא of a person standing on a threshold. After rejecting רשות הרבים, רשות היחיד and כרמלית, it concludes the threshold is a מקום פטור smaller than four by four טפחים, supported by רבי יוחנן. Finally, the ruling that passing an object across through the threshold leaves all three פטור is raised as a challenge to רבא, and that challenge continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
נִתְכַּוֵּון לִשְׁבּוֹת בִּרְשׁוּת הָרַבִּים,
If he intended to establish his Shabbat place in the public domain,
וְהִנִּיחַ עֵירוּבוֹ בְּבוֹר
and he placed his eiruv in a pit
לְמַעְלָה מֵעֲשָׂרָה טְפָחִים —
above ten handbreadths —
עֵירוּבוֹ עֵירוּב.
his eiruv is a valid eiruv.
