The threshold (אסקופה) in the laws of carrying: resting in a מקום פטור, the open/locked rule of אחרים and the לחי problem, and a 10×4 threshold as its own domain

Overview

This amud picks up in the middle of a challenge. Based on רבא, the גמרא argued that passing an object through a מקום פטור does not split the act of carrying. The גמרא answers that an object that only passes through the air is different from one that actually comes to rest in the מקום פטור. Next it quotes אחרים in the תוספתא: a threshold counts as inside when the door is open and as outside when the door is locked. The גמרא challenges this with רב's rule that a doorway needs its own לחי, even if it is smaller than four by four טפחים. רב then explains that the case is a half-roofed threshold of a מבוי. רב אשי explains it as a house threshold roofed with two narrow beams joined by לבוד, with the door between them. Finally, the תוספתא says a threshold ten טפחים high and four wide is a domain by itself. This supports רבי מאיר's decree against resting a load on such a pillar inside a רשות היחיד, made because of a mound in a רשות הרבים.
