שיעורים for carrying seeds, locusts, pits, and hairs; the end of פרק אמר רבי עקיבא and the opening משנה of פרק המצניע (שבת צ:)
Overview
The משנה finishes its list of minimum amounts (שיעורים) for carrying out (הוצאה) on שבת. Garden seeds need two. A live kosher locust and the special locust צפורת כרמים count at any amount, and רבי יהודה adds a live non-kosher locust, because people keep it as a toy for a child. The גמרא asks why seeds need two when one plant's worth of fertilizer counts. רב פפא answers that nobody plants just one seed. Two ברייתות then list amounts for date pits, which depend on their use, and for animal hairs and palm fibers. רב identifies צפורת כרמים, and אביי describes how it was used as a charm for wisdom. The גמרא explains that the תנא קמא worries a non-kosher locust will die and the child will eat it, while רבי יהודה says the child would mourn it instead. After the הדרן, a new chapter opens with the rule that one who stored an item for a purpose is liable for carrying any amount. אביי explains that the case is someone who forgot why he stored it.
