Topic

How a person's intention (מחשבה) shapes liability for הוצאה on שבת: storing an item for its use, the minimum amount for seeds, whether one person's storing can obligate someone else, and changing one's mind mid-act.

Overview

This amud continues the גמרא on the משנה about someone who stored a small item and later carried it out on שבת. First the גמרא explains that he is liable because a person acts on his original plan. Then רב יהודה in the name of שמואל says רבי מאיר makes a person liable even for one wheat kernel carried out for planting. רב יצחק בריה דרב יהודה challenges this with the case of someone who plans to carry out his whole house, and the גמרא answers that a strange plan nobody else shares is ignored. The גמרא then notes that the משנה's rule, that anyone else needs the normal measure, disagrees with רבי שמעון בן אלעזר, who holds that one person's storing can make another person liable. רבא in the name of רב נחמן rules that switching between eating and planting while carrying does not cancel liability. רבא then builds a ladder of questions about seeds that swelled or shrank along the way, and all of them end in תיקו. Finally רבא asks רב נחמן whether an olive-size of תרומה that completes an egg-size of impure food counts for שבת. רב נחמן begins answering from אבא שאול's ruling on the Temple breads, and the argument finishes on the next amud.
