The end of רבי יוחנן's קל וחומר about רבי יוסי, and רב's proofs that five תנאים hold אין שני עושה שלישי בחולין

Overview

The amud opens at the end of רבי יוחנן's קל וחומר. He wonders why רבי יוסי did not prove a רביעי in קודש from the case of a טבול יום. The גמרא blocks one possible answer. A טבול יום was once an אב הטומאה, but so was a מחוסר כיפורים, and רבי יוסי learned from him anyway. Then רב makes a new claim. Five תנאים, רבי מאיר, רבי יוסי, רבי יהושע, רבי אלעזר and רבי אליעזר, all hold that a שני does not make a שלישי in חולין. The גמרא proves this for each one in turn. For רבי מאיר, the proof is a משנה about someone who needs immersion only מדברי סופרים. For רבי יוסי, the proof is where his own קל וחומר stops. For רבי יהושע, it is a משנה that allows a שלישי only in חולין kept at the purity of תרומה. For רבי אלעזר, it is his ladder of levels in קודש, תרומה and חולין. The amud ends by quoting רבי אליעזר's משנה about taking חלה from pure dough for impure dough, and the proof from it comes on the next amud.
