Topic
Joining narrow cross-beams (לבוד versus חבוט רמי), shade versus sun in the סכך, very thick סכך, and a סוכה on a wagon, ship, tree or camel.
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a ברייתא about cross-beams (קורות) over an alleyway (מבוי). The ברייתא covers beams that leave a gap and two thin beams lying side by side. It also covers two thin beams at different heights, which רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה says we view as joined if both are between ten טפחים and twenty אמות. The גמרא infers from this that חבוט רמי works even for a beam less than a טפח wide, which challenges רבא. The answer rereads the ברייתא so that the beams are less than three טפחים apart and join through לבוד. The גמרא then sets two משניות against each other about a סוכה with equal shade and sun. It answers that one measures at the סכך above and the other on the floor below, and רב פפא backs this with a folk saying. A ברייתא next teaches that very thick סכך is kosher, and בית הלל allow it even when no sunlight comes through. Finally, a new משנה rules on a סוכה built on a wagon, ship, tree or camel. Each of these is kosher, but one may not go up into it on יום טוב if using it means relying on a tree or an animal.
