סוכה המדובללת, two-layer סכך, and the rule of חבוט רמי
Overview
The משנה rules that a סוכה that is מדובללת, and one whose shade is greater than its sun, is כשרה. It also rules that very thick סכך, so thick that stars cannot be seen through it, is כשרה. רב explains מדובללת as a sparse, 'poor' סוכה, and reads the first clause as one law. שמואל explains it as two layers of reeds, one up and one down, and reads the clause as two separate laws. אביי rules that two layers 3 טפחים apart are פסולה. רבא narrows this: if the upper layer is a טפח wide, it is כשרה because of חבוט רמי. רבא proves this from a משנה and a ברייתא about ceiling boards and corpse impurity. רב אשי then challenges the rule with a ברייתא about cross-beams over a מבוי, and that ברייתא continues on the next amud.
