The end of רב אסי's discussion of מצה of מעשר שני, and the משנה's rules for an אתרוג of תרומה, דמאי and מעשר שני, and for blemished, tipless and peeled אתרוגים
Overview
This amud joins the sugya in the middle. It finishes the source for רב אסי's view that, according to רבי מאיר, מצה of מעשר שני does not fulfill the obligation: a גזירה שוה links מצה to חלה, so both must be 'yours'. The גמרא tries to support this from a ברייתא where רבי מאיר exempts מעשר שני dough from חלה. It then asks whether that dispute really carries over to מצה, since the Torah writes 'עריסותיכם' twice about חלה. The גמרא then returns to the משנה. An אתרוג of impure תרומה is פסול. An אתרוג of pure תרומה is not taken at the start, for one of two reasons given by רבי אמי and רבי אסי, but it is כשר if taken. An אתרוג of דמאי depends on whether a poor person may eat דמאי, which is a מחלוקת of בית שמאי and בית הלל. An אתרוג of מעשר שני in ירושלים follows the same pattern as pure תרומה. Next comes רב's ruling on חזזית, which רבא challenges and the גמרא corrects. The גמרא also explains the missing פיטם. Finally, רבא rules that an אתרוג peeled like a red date is כשר; the משנה is raised against him, and the answer continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
״וְהָיָה בַּאֲכׇלְכֶם מִלֶּחֶם הָאָרֶץ״.
"And it shall be when you eat of the bread of the land"
מָה לְהַלָּן — מִשֶּׁלָּכֶם
Just as there (challah), it must be from yours
וְלֹא מִשֶּׁל מַעֲשֵׂר,
and not from tithe,
אַף כָּאן — מִשֶּׁלָּכֶם
so too here (matza), it must be from yours
The steps (26)
- StatementLinking מצה to חלה: it must be yours, not מעשר
- ProofA suggested support from the dispute about מעשר שני dough and חלה
- ChallengeWhy call it 'support'? It is the very same thing
- ResolutionThe real question: does the חלה dispute carry over to מצה?
- RejectionPerhaps dough is different: 'your dough' appears twice
- StatementBack to the משנה: an אתרוג of impure תרומה is פסול
- StatementWhy not take an אתרוג of pure תרומה: two reasons
- QuestionWhat is the practical difference between the two reasons?
- ResponseThe case: תרומה declared on everything except the outer peel
- StatementWhy the תרומה אתרוג still works after the fact
- QuestionWhy do בית הלל allow an אתרוג of דמאי?
- ResponseHe could make himself poor, so it counts as 'yours'
- ProofSource: the poor may be fed דמאי
- ResponseWhy בית שמאי disqualify an אתרוג of דמאי
- ProofThe משנה about feeding poor people and soldiers דמאי
- Proofרב הונא shows it is a מחלוקת between בית שמאי and בית הלל
- StatementAn אתרוג of מעשר שני in ירושלים: both reasons apply
- StatementIf he took it, it is כשר, and which תנא this follows
- Statementרב חסדא quotes רב: blemishes in several places are כשר
- Challengeרבא: several places makes it spotted and פסול
- Resolutionרב's ruling moved to the second half of the משנה
- StatementA blemish on the top of the אתרוג disqualifies at any size
- StatementWhat 'its פיטם was removed' means
- StatementAn אתרוג peeled like a red date is fit
- ChallengeChallenge: the משנה says a peeled אתרוג is unfit
- ResolutionStart of the answer: it is not difficult
