This amud opens by settling a contradiction about a peeled אתרוג: the משנה means a fully peeled one, and רבא means a partly peeled one. עולא בר חנינא then teaches that a hole going all the way through disqualifies at any size, but a shallow hole only at the size of an איסר. רבא asks what happens if 'signs of a טרפה' appear in an אתרוג. The גמרא explains that he means an אתרוג that liquefied inside, like a liquefied lung, which רבי יוחנן rules כשר as long as its bronchia are intact. The question is whether the lung heals only because it is sealed from air, while an exposed אתרוג would rot. A ברייתא listing disqualified kinds of אתרוג is brought as a proof, but the proof is rejected, because תפוח and סרוח can both describe outside problems. The גמרא then reconciles two ברייתות about a כושי אתרוג. אביי and רבא each give their own answer. Finally, רבה links רבי עקיבא's ruling on an unripe אתרוג to רבי שמעון's exemption of small אתרוגים from מעשרות, and אביי shows that each ruling may rest on its own separate reason.
