שמיני עצרת as its own festival, שמחה on its night, ending the סוכה on the seventh day, and the start of ניסוך המים

Overview

This amud opens by finishing a list from the previous daf. The list gives six ways that שמיני עצרת is a separate festival from סוכות, summed up by the memory sign פז"ר קש"ב. Next, a משנה teaches that הלל and שמחה last all eight days. The גמרא learns from the word "אך" in "והיית אך שמח" that the night of the last יום טוב is included in שמחה, because it follows a day of rejoicing. The first night is not included, because no day of rejoicing comes before it. A second משנה teaches that the סוכה must stay up all seven days, but the כלים may be moved into the house from מנחה onward. The גמרא then asks what someone does if he has no place to move his כלים. In ארץ ישראל he makes the סוכה invalid. In חוץ לארץ he lights a lamp in a small סוכה, or brings the cooking pots into a large one. Finally, a new משנה begins describing ניסוך המים: a golden jug filled from the שילוח, the שופר blasts at the שער המים, and the two basins on the מזבח. That description continues on the next amud.
