Washing rules for an אבל during שבעה, and where the fast-day prayer goes in the עמידה.

Overview

The amud continues the laws of an אבל washing during שבעה. In the first version, רבא allows a mourner to wash in cold water. A ברייתא about a בוגרת is read as a challenge to him, but the גמרא answers that the ברייתא is about eye makeup and hair dye. A story about רבי יוסי בר חנינא washing in cold water is offered as support for רבא. It is pushed away as a special case of mourning after mourning, where a ברייתא allows some easing and רב חסדא sets its limits. In a second version, רבא forbids cold water, and the same sources are discussed again from that side. The final הלכה is that the whole body may not be washed at all, while face, hands and feet may be washed in cold water, and anointing is allowed only to remove dirt. The גמרא then turns to where an individual who fasts adds the fast-day prayer, and רב יצחק and רב ששת place it inside שומע תפלה. A ברייתא about 'eighteen and nineteen' starts a debate over how many ברכות the שליח ציבור says on each stage of the public fasts. That debate continues on the next amud.
