The מעמד's Torah readings, the special wood-offering days, and the stories and families behind them
Overview
The amud opens with the last words of an earlier discussion about splitting a short Torah paragraph between readers. Next the גמרא asks how to read the משנה about the אנשי מעמד: was the מוסף reading done from a ספר תורה or by heart? A ברייתא shows that שחרית and מוסף were read from the scroll and only מנחה was by heart. רבי יוסי adds that at מנחה everyone said it together, like שמע. The גמרא then explains that a קרבן מוסף day cancels more of the מעמד than a קרבן עצים day, because the first comes from the Torah and the second is rabbinic. A ברייתא tells how the wood-offering days began: families donated wood when the returning exiles found none, and the נביאים made those days permanent. Two stories explain odd family names. One family hid בכורים under dried figs and carried a pestle past the guards. The other, בני סלמאי, disguised their wood as ladders. The גמרא then identifies the families of פחת מואב and עדין and asks which תנא the משנה follows, answering that it fits one version of רבי יוסי's view. The amud ends as מר קשישא begins a question to רב אשי about the first of טבת, and the question continues on the next amud.
