Bad fortune in אב, and the laws of laundering and haircuts in the week of תשעה באב: before and after the fast

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an earlier idea. Since אב is a time of bad fortune and אדר a time of good fortune, a Jew should delay a court case with a non-Jew in אב and try to hold it in אדר. Two short teachings of רב follow, explaining verses in ירמיהו and בראשית. The גמרא then returns to the משנה, which forbids haircuts and laundering in the week of תשעה באב. רב נחמן allows laundering to put clothes away, but רב ששת forbids even that. After a back-and-forth about the Thursday permission, a ברייתא refutes רב נחמן. רבי יוחנן adds that linen, though not subject to the fine-laundering rule, may not be worn that week. רב and שמואל then argue whether the restrictions continue after the fast. A ברייתא seems to refute שמואל, but he answers that תנאים already disagreed about this. רבי יוחנן says all three תנאים learned their views from one פסוק in הושע, and the גמרא begins matching each view to a word in it, a discussion that continues on the next amud.
